            Short Biography of Philip Po-Fang Hsieh

Philip Po-Fang Hsieh, also known as Po-Fang Hsieh (謝伯芳), was born into a Presbyterian minister’s family in Tainan, Taiwan. He attended Sinkang Elementary School, Chiayi, and Chang Jung High School in Tainan. In 1953, he entered National Taiwan University in Taipei and graduated in 1957 with a B. S. degree in mathematics. In 1959, he entered University of Minnesota and earned his M. S. degree in 1961 and Ph. D. degree in 1964, both in mathematics. Professors Yasutaka Sibuya and Hugh L. Turrittin were his doctoral advisors. He started as an Assistant Professor in 1964 in Department of Mathematics, Western Michigan University (WMU), advanced to Associate Professor and Professor, and retired as Professor Emeritus in 2000.

In 1970-71, P. Hsieh spent sabbatical leave at Mathematics Research Center, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D. C. He also had short term visiting positions at Mathematics Research Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Department of Mathematics, UCLA. He received two research grants and one conference grant from National Science Foundation, in addition to five Faculty Research Fellowships from WMU. He was invited to attend and speak at many research conferences from U. S. and foreign institutions. He served in several organizational committees for these meetings and chaired some special sessions. He published over fifty research articles in professional journals, as monographs, or as book chapters. He co-authored one book and co-edited two Proceedings of international conferences that he co-organized. He received the Research Publication Award from U. S. Naval Research Laboratory in 1972 and the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award from WMU in 1995. He supervised doctoral dissertations for four students.
